Landscape construction

We don't do mowing rounds or weekly gardening. We build the parts of a garden that are meant to last: the terrace you'll eat on for thirty years, the boundary that keeps the horses in, the avenue your grandchildren will walk under. And we keep the big hedges in shape.

Services

Four trades, one crew

A large-format stone terrace with a covered seating area and clipped hedging A stonemason in gloves and safety glasses cutting a paving flag to size with a disc cutter

Stone

Patios, terraces & steps

York stone, sandstone, granite setts and porcelain, laid by hand on a proper sub-base. We dig down to firm ground, compact it, and put the falls and drainage in before a single flag goes down. That's why our terraces are still level a decade later.

  • Terraces, patios and garden rooms
  • Steps, retaining walls and level changes
  • Paths, driveway borders and courtyards

Boundaries

Fencing, gates & walls

Long runs of post and rail across paddocks, close-board for privacy, oak gates hung to swing true. Where a wall is the right answer, we rebuild in stone to match what's already there.

  • Post and rail, estate and paddock fencing
  • Close-board, hit-and-miss and screening
  • Oak field gates, garden gates and stone walls

Hedges

Big hedge cutting

Four-metre leylandii on a boundary, a hundred metres of beech down a drive, a yew that needs bringing back. We cut the hedges a gardener with a ladder can't, with straight faces and level tops, and clear every cutting away.

  • Annual cuts of tall and long hedges
  • Height and width reductions
  • Renovating overgrown yew, beech and laurel

Planting at scale

Trees that arrive already grown.

A sapling takes thirty years to look like anything. Most of our clients would rather not wait. So we source semi-mature trees, four to eight metres tall, from specialist UK nurseries and plant them while they're dormant.

Each tree goes into a pit dug and improved for it, held with underground anchors so there are no stakes to look at, and fitted with an irrigation pipe at the root ball. We water them through their first summer, because that's when new trees fail.

The working year

Our year starts in autumn

Trees go in while they're dormant. Stone wants dry weather and no frost. Big hedge cuts wait until the birds have finished nesting. So every job has a right time, and booking early gets you it.

FAQs

Questions we're often asked

Do you do garden maintenance?

Not general maintenance: no mowing rounds or weekly gardening. The exception is big hedges. We cut and reduce tall boundary hedges, long estate hedges and formal hedging once or twice a year. Everything else we do is construction and planting, and if you need a regular gardener we're happy to recommend one.

Which areas do you cover?

Harrogate and roughly twenty miles around it: Knaresborough, Ripon, Wetherby, Boroughbridge, Otley, Ilkley, Tadcaster, north Leeds and across to York. For larger projects we'll travel further.

Is the site visit free?

Yes. We walk the garden with you, check levels, access and drainage, and follow up with drawings and a fixed quote.

When is the best time to plant trees?

While they're dormant. Root-balled and semi-mature trees go in from October to March, bare-root trees and hedging from November to March. Book a survey in late summer or early autumn to plant the following winter.
